This volume is a unique and pioneering collaborative effort between Indian and French researchers engaged in examining India’s international migration. It adopts a historical perspective in examining contemporary Indian migration as an extension of a centuries-old process. The book brings together the multidisciplinary perspectives of French and Indian scholars –demographers, economists, sociologists, geographers, anthropologists and historians- on the dynamics of international migration ; skilled and unskilled migration ; body shopping ; return migration ; immigration policies in the Gulf and experiences of emigrants from the states of Kerala and Punjab. The essays also highlight current dimensions like skilled migrants in the IT sector in Malaysia ; the entrepreneurial ventures of Keralites in the UAE ; household remittances ; inequality and poverty in Kerala ; the gender dimension in Indian migration (with focus on nurses and female domestic workers in the Gulf) and cross-border migratory movements connected to the European Union, with an overview of the emigration of Sikhs and Tamils to France. Finally, the volume discusses the evolution of India’s public policies towards its diaspora.
